INTRODUCTION

This Edition of Were We Once Angels is an updated and revised edition of a book I began in the early 70s, entitled The Seven Times Seven Plan of God. In the early 70s I saw an amazing simplicity to Bible chronology which seemed to outline 7000 years of human history with Christ coming at the 4000 year mark and coming again about the 6000 year mark. This 7000 year theory is not new, but my chronology is and differs in many points from Archbishop James Ussher and others.

In his book Armageddon: Appointment With Destiny, Grant Jeffrey says, “Writings could be produced in great numbers. . . to illustrate the early Church’s belief that the Millennium would commence upon the completion of six thousand years from Adam. . . . It is unfortunate, but perhaps providential, that changes in the calendar make it impossible to calculate with precision when the two-thousand-year period [from the birth of Christ] will end, except to note that is must occur in our generation.” 1

The Lord said we could not know the “day or hour” of His return. But He also said that a certain generation would see some signs to indicate that it was near. One of the most important signs is the regathering of the Jews to their ancient homeland and forming a nation in 1948. Well over 100 years ago many Bible scholars predicted this would happen before Jesus returned. Another sign is Israel conquering of East Jerusalem and the Old Temple site in 1967. Another sign is the plan of making ancient Judea and Samaria, the West Bank, an Arab state with East Jerusalem as the capital.

Another very important sign will be a future false peace in the Middle East. The Bible indicates that when Israel finally says “peace and safety,” then “sudden destruction” will surely come. This time of trouble will be so bad that only the return of Christ will save humanity.

Concerning His return, Billy Graham says, “Experience tells us that greed, lust, and selfishness will continue to rear their ugly heads. The Bible teaches that a time of peace will eventually come, but the peace will be imposed by the Antichrist—by the coming of a world dictator. It will last but a short time, and then the world will enter a period in which the judgments of God fall upon the human race. This period will culminate in Armageddon, in a confrontation between the forces of good and the forces of evil which could exterminate the human race. But God, the Bible teaches, will intervene to conclude our age.” 2
