Chapter 10

1. P. 337.

2. V. 5, p. 216.

3. Josephus says Samaria was destroyed about August in the 12th year of Nero (War 2,18:1). If Josephus reckoned Nero’s beginning October 13, the date most believe Nero began, then he has Samaria being destroyed in 66 A.D. If Josephus used June of 54, then he has the Jews destroying Samaria in 65 A.D.

Augustus died in August 14 A.D. and was followed by Tiberius. Josephus says Tiberius ruled 22 years, 5 months, 3 days (Ant. 28,6:10), which would place his death in January 37; Gaius ruled 3 years, 8 months (War 2,11:1), which would place his death in September 40; Claudius ruled 13 years, 8 months, 20 days (War 2,12:8), which would place his death in June 54.

Suetonius says Titus “was born on 30 December, A.D. 41, in the memorable year of Gaius' assassination. . .” But in another place, Suetonius says Titus “died at the age of forty-one” on “1 September, A.D. 81.” (See The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. Translated by Robert Graves, pages 292, 298.) If Titus died in 81 A.D. at the age of 41, he would have been born in 40 A.D., which agrees with Josephus for the year Gaius was assassinated.

4. Antiquities 14,4:4; 14,14. 15,7:3; 15,10:3; Wars 1,20.

5. V. 19, p. 918.

6. Antiquities 15,8:5.

7. Ibid., 17,1:1; 17,2:4. One reason the people hated Antipater is because he had arranged the death of Herod's favorite sons, the ones Judah wanted when Herod died (Wars 1,28:1). Antipater also plotted to kill Herod. When he was caught, Herod reminded Antipater he had made him king, and, in a “manner,” the only “authority.” Antipater used this in his defense, telling Herod: Then why would I want to kill you, since “I was a king already” (Wars 1,32:1-3). Antipater's kingship was taken away, and he was executed. Herod died five days later. (Ant. 17,8:1; Wars 1,33.)

After seeing the significance of Antipater’s co-rule, I read an article about Herod. In it the authors point out the importance of Antipater’s kingship but for a different reason. They believe Philip and Archelaus may have tried to blot out the record of Antipater’s rule and counted the beginning of their rule from 4 B.C., the time Herod made Antipater king. They believe “Herod and Antipater ruled jointly from 4 B.C.,” but Herod was disgraced by Augustus in 4 B.C. and his “reign was seen to have officially ended.”(See note 13 below.)

Appendix B

1. For illustration: Suppose a king died in the month of Sivan and his son began ruling. The common way would consider the son’s 1st year as beginning in Sivan, but the month of Nisan of the following year would begin his first official year... When Jeroboam rebelled, he changed the place of worship and may have changed the point of reckoning from Nisan to the 7th or 8thmonth (see 1 Kings12:32). If this is the case, Hoshea may have begun his common rule late in the 12th official year of Ahaz. Ahaz may have died early in his 16th offical year and Hezekiah began his common rule in the3rd official year of Hoshea.
