(103) Jesus Heads for Jerusalem

Matthew 8:19-22, Luke 9:51-62, John 7:2-10

[A]Now the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was at hand, [B]so Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “You should leave here and go into Judea, so that your disciples may also see the works you are doing. [C]For no one does anything in secret, if he wants to become well known. If you can do these things, show yourself to the world.” [D](For even His own brothers didn’t believe in Him.)

[E]Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but you can go at any time. [F]The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it, speaking of its evil deeds. [G]You go ahead to this feast. I will not go up to this feast now, for my time has not yet fully come.” [H]So having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

[I]And it came about, after His brothers left, Jesus firmly fixed His face toward Jerusalem, for the time had come for Him to be received up. [J]He sent messengers before Him, who went into a Samaritan village to make arrangements for Him. [K]But they did not receive Him, because they saw He was headed for Jerusalem.

[L]When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” [M]But He turned and rebuked them, saying, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of. [N]For the Son of Man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” And they went to another village.

[O]Now as they traveled along the road, a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Master, I will follow you wherever you go.”

[P]And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

[Q]Then He said to another disciple, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

[R]“Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead,” Jesus said to him. “But you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

[S]Still another said, “Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go home and say farewell to my household.”

[T]“No one,” Jesus said to him, “who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

[U]Then Jesus arrived at the Feast, not openly, but, as it were, in secret.

Matthew 8:19-22, KJV

19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Luke 9:51-62, KJV

51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. 57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

John 7:2-10, KJV

2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. 10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
