(144) The Rich Young Ruler

Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30

[A]Now as He was setting out on His way, look, a certain ruler came running and knelt before Him, asking, “Good Master, what good thing must I do to inherit eternal life?”

[B]“Why do you call me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to inter into life, keep the commandments.”

      [C]“Which ones?” he asked.

“You know the commandments,” Jesus said. “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

[D]“Master,” the young man declared, “I have kept all these things from my youth. What do I still lack?”

[E]Now Jesus loved him, and when He heard these things, He looked at him and said, “You still lack one thing. If you want to be perfect, go and sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, take up the cross, and follow me.”

[F]But when the young man heard this, he was sad and went away very grieved; for he was very rich with great possessions.

[G]When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, He looked around and said to His disciples, “Truly, I tell you, it is hard for the rich to enter into the kingdom of heaven!”

[H]The disciples were astonished at His words, so Jesus again said to them, “Children, again I say to you, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

[I]When His disciples heard this, they were astonished beyond measure and exceedingly amazed, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?”

[J]And Jesus, looking at them, said to them, “With men this is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible. Yes, the things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

[K]Then Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. So what will we have?”

[L]And Jesus said to them, “Truly, I tell you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His glory, you also will sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. [M]And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands in my name and for the sake of the gospel of God’s kingdom will be blessed now, in this present time. He will receive a hundrefold in houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands -- with persecutions; and in the world to come, he shall inherit everlasting life. Yes, anyone who has left all this for me will receive eternal life. [N]But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Matthew 19:16-30, KJV

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. 27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? 28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. 30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. Luke 18:18-30, KJV

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. 20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. 21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. 22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. 24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26 And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? 27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. 28 Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. 29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, 30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
