(164) Jesus Speaks Against the Religious Leaders

Matthewt 23:1-12, Mark 12:38-40, Luke 20:45-47

[A]Then Jesus spoke to the multitude, and to His disciples, who were in the audience. He taught them, saying, “Beware of the scribes. For the scribes and the Pharisees sit in the chair of Moses, [B]and you must therefore observe and do whatever they tell you; but do not do their works, for they don’t practice what they preach. [C]They will lay and tie heavy burdens on the shoulders of men, which are hard to bear; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them move the load. [D]They devour the property of widows, and then put on a show, pretending to be good by saying long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.

[E]“Everything they do is done so men may see them. They make their phylacteries[1] broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. [F]They love to walk around in long robes and have the chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at feasts, and to be greeted in the markets and have men call them, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’

[G]“But you must not be called ‘Rabbi.’ For you have but one Teacher -- Christ. And you are all brothers. [H]And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have but one Father, who is in heaven. [I]And do not be called ‘masters,’ for you have but one Master -- Christ. [J]But the greatest among you will be your servant. [K]And whoever exalts himself will be abased, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

Matthewt 23:1-12, KJV

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Mark 12:38-40, KJV

38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, 39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: 40 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Luke 20:45-47, KJV

45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

(1) Phylacteries were little prayer boxes worn on the arm.
