(205) Jesus Led to Golgotha

Matthew 27:31-34, Mark 15:20-23, Luke 23:26-32, John 19:17

[A]And when they had mocked Him, they took off the robe -- the purple, and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him. And He, bearing His cross, went out.

[B]Now as they came out and were leading Him away, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, passing by. He was coming out of the country. They grabbed hold of Simon and laid the cross on him, compelling him to bear the cross of Jesus. (Simon, the Cyrenian, was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)

[C]A great number a people followed Him, including women, who also mourned and lamented Him. [D]But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. [E]For look, the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts which never nursed.’

[F]“Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’[1] [G]For if they do these things when the tree is green, what shall be done in the dry season?”

[H]Now there were also two others led with Him to be put to death, and they were criminals.

[I]And they brought Him to the place called Golgotha in the Hebrew, which means when translated, The Place of a Skull. When they arrived, [J]they gave Him vinegar[2] to drink, mingled with gall. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink it. [K]They gave Him wine mingled with myrrh, but He did not take it.

Mark 15:20-23, KJV

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. 21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. 22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. 23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

Luke 23:26-32, KJV

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? 32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

John 19:17, KJV

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

(1) Hos. 10:8 (2) This was wine or another strong drink turned sour by acetous fermentation. The "vinegar" may have been a sour wine mingled with gall and myrrh.
