(206) The Crucifixion

Matthew 27:35-44, Mark 15:24-32, Luke 23:33-43, John 19:18-27

[A]And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, along with the two thieves, one on His right hand and the other on His left. So Jesus was crucified in the midst of criminals, [B]which fulfilled the Scripture which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors,”[1]

[C]It was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

[D]Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

[E]Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross over His head. The inscription of the accusation against Him was written in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, and said:

THIS IS JESUS OF NAZARETH,

THE KING OF THE JEWS

[F]Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. [G]Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ “

[H]Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

[I]And when they had crucified Him, the soldiers took His garments and divided them into four parts, one for each of them. They also took His tunic; and they casts lots upon them to see what each would take.

Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. So they said among themselves, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be.” This happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They parted my garments among them, and for my vesture, they cast lots upon it.”[2]

This is why the soldiers did these things; [J]and they watched Him as they sat there.

[K]And those who passed by insulted Him with blasphemy, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha, you who will destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself -- if you are the Son of God --and come down from the cross.”

[L]The chief priests, along with the scribes and elders, also mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. [M]If He is the King of Israel, let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe Him.”

[N] “Yes,” others joined in, “let Christ, the King of Israel, descend from the cross now, that we may see and believe. [O]He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now -- if He will have Him; for he said: I am the Son of God.”

[P]And the people, along with the rulers, stood there staring and sneering. “He saved others,” they said, “let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

[Q]And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming to Him, offering Him vinegar, [R]and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.”

[S]And the thieves, who were crucified with Him, also threw the same insults at Him as they hung there. “If you are the Christ,” one said, “save yourself and us.” [T]But the other one suddenly believed, and rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same condemnation? [U]We indeed are punished justly, for we have received the reward we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

[V]Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

[W]And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, today you shall be with me in Paradise.”[3]

[X]Now the mother of Jesus stood by His cross, along with His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. [Y]So when Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, look, your son!” [Z]Then He said to the disciple, “Look, your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her into his own home.

(206) The Crucifixion

Matthew 27:35-44, KJV

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

(206) The Crucifixion

Mark 15:24-32, KJV

24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. 25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. 28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. 29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, 30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross. 31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

(206) The Crucifixion

Luke 23:33-43, KJV

33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. 35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

(206) The Crucifixion

John 19:18-27, KJV

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

(1) Isa. 53:12 (2) Ps. 22:18 (3) There is no comma in the Greek before or after the word "today" in Luke 23:43, and it could be rendered, "I tell you today, you shall be with me in Paradise." Some use this to say that the repentant thief did not go to Paradise that day. But he did. They also say a person cannot repent and turn to Christ in child-like faith one moment and go to heaven the next should death occur. But you can.
