(62) The Unpardonable Sin

Matthew 12:22-37, Mark 3:19b-30

[A]They went into a house, and the multitude came together again, so many that they could not even eat a meal. [B]Then someone was brought to Him who was possessed with a demon. He was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that the blind and mute could both speak and see. [C]And all the people were amazed, and said, “Is not this the Son of David?”

[D]When His friends heard of this, they went out to lay hold of Him, saying, “He is out of His mind.” [E]But when the scribes and Pharisees, who had come down from Jerusalem, heard it, they said, “This fellow has Beelzebub, and is able to cast out demons only by the prince of demons.”

[F]Jesus knew their thoughts, so He called them and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? Every kingdom divided against itself will be brought to desolation. It cannot stand. And every city divided against itself will not stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. [G]And if Satan cast out Satan and rises up against himself and is divided, then how can his kingdom stand? He cannot stand and has come to an end. [H]And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. [I]But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

[J]“No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then he can plunder his house. [K]He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters abroad. [L]Truly, I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven the sons of men. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is in danger of eternal damnation. [M]Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven, neither in this world or in the world to come.”

[N]Jesus said this because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Then He continued:

[O]“Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

[P]“O you generation of vipers. How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. [Q]A good man brings out good things from what’s treasured in his heart. But an evil man brings out evil things from the evil he treasures. [R]So I say to you, that every careless word that men shall speak, they will give an account for it in the day of judgment. [S]For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

(62) The Unpardonable Sin

Matthew 12:22-37, KJV

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. 25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. 30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

(62) The Unpardonable Sin

Mark 19b-30, KJV

19b and they went into an house. 20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. 22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. 23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. 28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: 30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
